Polaris Electro-Optics Raises $50M In Series B Financing

Polaris Electro-Optics raised $50 million in Series B financing to scale its FenGlass electro-optic modulator platform into production for next generation optical interconnects targeting AI infrastructure.

Polaris Electro-Optics’ latest $50 million round was led by Walden Catalyst Ventures, with new participation from Socratic Partners, Cambium Capital, Knollwood, and Hudson River Trading. Existing investors Koch Disruptive Technologies (KDT), M Ventures, Rhapsody Venture Partners, Buff Gold Ventures, and Blue Sky Capital also participated. Andy Kau, Partner at Walden Catalyst Ventures, joined the board of directors.

This brings the company’s total capital raised to approximately $62.5–62.8 million. Prior rounds included a $3 million Seed in late 2023 (led by Rhapsody with M Ventures and Buff Gold) and a Series A in 2025 (led by KDT, with participation from Rhapsody, M Ventures, Buff Gold, and Blue Sky; reported in the $10 million range in some university linked sources). The company was founded in 2021 as a University of Colorado Boulder spinout.

What is Polaris Electro-Optics’ technology?

Polaris develops high speed electro-optic modulators based on its proprietary FenGlass (ferroelectric nematic glass / FNG) platform. This material exhibits a strong Pockels effect and is integrated directly onto finished silicon photonic wafers after they leave the foundry, using standard processes with no poling required. The approach delivers 400 Gbps per lane (and a path toward 800G) at sub-volt drive voltages, with a compact footprint, excellent linearity, high energy efficiency, and compatibility with standard CMOS silicon photonics flows.

Key claimed advantages over competing next generation modulators (such as those based on thin film lithium niobate or electro-optic polymers) include the elimination of trade-offs between manufacturability, reliability, and bandwidth. FenGlass builds on materials commercially deployed for decades at large scale, supports tunable electro-optic response across product generations (200G to 400G+), has completed Telcordia reliability testing, and is compatible with standard solder reflow, critical for flip chip, 2.5D, and 3D packaging used in pluggable modules, near packaged optics (NPO), and co packaged optics (CPO). The company has demonstrated and independently verified 400 Gbps/lane performance (building on earlier 102 Gbps PAM-4 silicon photonic modulator results).

CEO Morten Nissov (appointed in the Series A timeframe; previously in executive roles at Genuine Optics, Lumentum, and Oclaro) stated that the industry faces simultaneous speed and manufacturing challenges that existing platforms address only partially, and that FenGlass enables the next node while remaining inside qualified silicon photonics manufacturing. Andy Kau of Walden Catalyst emphasized that the material integrates onto finished wafers using processes already run by contract manufacturers, making the path to scale a primary investment thesis.

How will Polaris Electro-Optics use the funds?

Proceeds will fund portfolio expansion, volume scale-up, product tape-outs, qualification, and engineering hiring across the company’s sites (materials development in Boulder, Colorado; photonic solutions/HQ in Carlsbad, California). Polaris is partnering with optical module makers, hyperscalers, and major cloud infrastructure providers. First product launch is targeted for 2027, spanning pluggable modules, NPO, CPO, and coherent scale across architectures to address bandwidth and energy constraints in AI scale-up, scale-out, scale across, and data center interconnect (DCI) applications.

AI infrastructure growth has made data movement a primary bottleneck: networks are bandwidth constrained and energy per bit is rising unsustainably. Demand is pushing toward 400 Gbps per lane and higher. Polaris positions FenGlass as a drop-in enhancement to the existing silicon photonics ecosystem rather than a full stack replacement, lowering adoption risk and accelerating time to market relative to approaches requiring new substrates, fabs, or supply chains.

The investor mix reflects both deep tech/semiconductor expertise (Walden Catalyst, with partners including Lip-Bu Tan and Young Sohn and a focus on data/AI and semiconductors; KDT as Koch’s venture arm with strategic ties including Molex) and broader participation (including quantitative trading firm Hudson River Trading). Leadership includes Nissov as CEO, founder/CTO Cory Pecinovsky (VP of Materials), and a board featuring representatives from key investors plus industry figures. The company reports roughly 30 employees and is hiring process and design engineers.

The Series B marks the transition from proven device level results and reliability milestones to commercial production scale, timed to the industry’s shift toward higher lane rate optical interconnects for AI infrastructure.
