In a Series E round, Temporal secured $550 million at a $12.55 billion valuation, more than doubling its prior mark, as demand for its durable execution platform surged with agentic AI workloads.
Temporal raised $550 million in a Series E round at a $12.55 billion valuation. This more than doubled the company’s valuation from its $5 billion Series D just seven months earlier (a $300 million round led by Andreessen Horowitz in February 2026). Total capital raised now stands at approximately $1.2 billion.
The round was co-led by Lightspeed, Wellington Management, Growth Equity at Goldman Sachs Alternatives, and Tiger Global. Strong participation came from T. Rowe Price and SV Angel. Returning investors included a16z (Andreessen Horowitz), Sequoia, Index Ventures, GIC, Sapphire Ventures, and Amplify. The participation of large institutional investors such as Wellington, Goldman Sachs Alternatives, and T. Rowe Price marks a clear shift toward longer term, more traditional capital alongside classic venture firms.

What is Temporal?
Temporal (Temporal Technologies), founded in 2019 and headquartered in the Bellevue/Seattle area, provides an open source durable execution platform. Co-founders Samar Abbas (CEO) and Maxim Fateev (CTO) previously worked on related systems at Amazon (SQS and Simple Workflow Service), Microsoft (Durable Task Framework, foundational to Azure Durable Functions), and Uber (Cadence, which reached over 100 internal use cases before open sourcing).
The core offering, Durable Execution, lets developers write ordinary code in their preferred languages (Go, Java, TypeScript, Python, .NET, and others). Temporal handles orchestration, state persistence, automatic recovery from failures, retries, and long running processes that can span days, weeks, or months. Workflows resume exactly where they left off after outages, without custom recovery logic. The open source core is free; revenue comes primarily from Temporal Cloud, the managed commercial service.
This addresses a longstanding distributed systems challenge that has become acute with agentic AI: applications must reliably coordinate multi step, long running work across brittle infrastructure while AI systems increasingly interact with core business plumbing (payments, operations, regulated processes).
Key figures released with the round underscore rapid acceleration:
- Annualized revenue run rate surpassed $250 million, up more than 200% year over year (some reports describe it as more than tripling).
- Net dollar retention has remained above 200% since February 2026.
- In August 2026 alone, the platform processed 1.9 trillion billable actions (up more than 350% year over year; one letter cited a 368% increase).
- Open source installs exceeded 43 million (up 134% since late 2025 / early 2026), with roughly 450,000 developers building on the project.
- Paying customers surpassed 4,300 (up 139% year over year), with about 4,000 organizations on Temporal Cloud.
Named customers include OpenAI (usage grown 60 fold in under a year), Snap (handles 414 million Stories per day on the platform), NVIDIA, Netflix, and JPMorgan Chase (running in regulated production environments). The platform supports both traditional mission critical workloads (payments, fulfillment, onboarding) and emerging agentic AI systems that run for extended periods.
Headcount has doubled over the past year to approximately 570 employees across multiple continents.

How will Temporal use the funds?
The funding is explicitly positioned around the rise of agentic AI and the heightened reliability requirements it creates. Short demos of AI agents are easy to build; production trust (surviving failures, long waits, external dependencies, and complex multi system interactions) is the differentiator. Temporal positions Durable Execution as foundational infrastructure rather than an add-on.
Proceeds will expand global operations, deepen platform R&D (including core primitives, reliability, and security enhancements requested by enterprise customers), grow developer and enterprise go to market teams, and scale infrastructure.
Temporal competes in the durable workflow / orchestration space against alternatives including AWS Step Functions, Azure Durable Functions, Inngest, Trigger.dev, Restate, DBOS, Orkes Conductor, Camunda, Cloudflare Workflows, and various agent specific runtimes (LangGraph deployments, Bedrock AgentCore, etc.). Its strengths are language agnostic SDKs, mature event history replay model, open source flexibility (self host or cloud), and proven scale on mission critical and AI workloads. Trade offs include the operational model of running workers and the engineering discipline required for deterministic workflows.
The round occurs amid heavy investor focus on AI infrastructure. Temporal’s trajectory, from earlier rounds (including a ~$1.72 billion Series C in 2025 and a secondary at $2.5 billion) to the rapid valuation jump, reflects both organic growth and the broader market’s prioritization of reliability layers for production AI systems.
At roughly 50x the $250 million revenue run rate, the valuation prices in continued hyper growth and category leadership in durable execution for both traditional and agentic workloads. Strong net retention, massive action volume growth, and high profile AI and enterprise adoption support that thesis. The addition of institutional capital alongside top tier VCs signals confidence in a path toward broader scale and potential future liquidity events. The company’s history solving the same reliability problems across multiple technology eras positions it well for the current AI driven intensification of those problems.
